Bangkokians’ love affair with coffee is obvious, and the city’s roasters and baristas are working hard to be recognized in the global coffee scene. And yes, we’re getting there. Proof would be these specialty coffee shops at Siam Discovery, all of which embody everything innovative about Bangkok’s coffee scene.

Red Diamond

First set up in Ladprao, this specialty coffee empire has expanded to more than 14 branches in Bangkok, Pattaya and even Tokyo. Here at Siam Discovery (located on the ground floor), Red Diamond is marked by handsome and dark industrial interiors and old-school hip-hop music blaring in the background. Grab a seat at the coffee bar, hang out, have a chat with the barista and order their new drink  — the Sunrise, a refreshing coffee drink mixed with soda and topped with cream cheese, cookie crumbles and lemon peels. Available only at Siam Discovery, Siam Paragon and Iconsiam, it’s the perfect drink to get into the spirit of the festive season. Oh, and do hurry as this item is only available till the end of the year.

You can also order one of their classic signatures, such as Dirty (espresso shot topped with cold milk) or a classic cup of cold brew or batch brew coffee. If you’re looking for a gift for your coffee geek buddies, consider Red Diamond’s drip box set (B999) which has 11 different types of coffee beans, including Costa Rica Mozart, Panama Geisha Esmeralda and Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Adorsi Limited — we’re pretty sure they will have fun browsing through this fun box.

Brave Roasters

Brave Roasters started out in 2013, roasting beans for many cafes across Thailand. Owner Ekameth 'Tay' Witvasutti is one of Thailand’s coffee wizards and has done a lot of R&D from crop to cup. He works with local farmers on every step of the process, from harvesting to milling and roasting. According to Tay, it’s pretty exceptional how a crop of beans can taste so different when various processes are used.

Brave Roasters is situated in a bright, open space that connects to ODS, a popular co-working space with large windows that look out to the passing Skytrain. There’s also a small alfresco area dotted with relaxing greenery.

All the baristas know their coffee and can take you through a journey of coffee appreciation. In addition to filter, batch brew and cold brew coffee, Brave Roasters also has signature brews infused with homemade syrups. Try Dark & Stormy (double espresso with ginger lemon syrup and sparkling water) or Fume de Latte (espresso with berries sauce and cold smoked hickory wood). And if you want to stock some at home, there are a variety of roasted beans or cold brew concentrates on the board.

They also do a good job on the food offering. There’s fusilli with shrimp and pesto sauce or spaghetti with mushroom and tomato sauce for hungry customers, while a wide array of desserts, such as cheesecake, pumpkin cake and sweet potato cake with local herbs (our fave) entice the sweet-toothed from behind a glass counter.

Pour Over Lab
One of Bangkok’s latest claims to the slow bar craze is Pour Over Lab. Their love of coffee shines through in the use of brewing methods that, as the name suggests, takes a bit of time, such as pour over, syphon, delter press, French press and the Poursteady machine. At this white-washed, modern space in the Cazh Zone (1/F), lab equipment is strewn all over and the staff wear lab coats.

For the sake of quality and the full coffee experience, each barista is trained under SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) standards for at least six months before they can serve up a cup of joe. They’re also trained to help you make a choice, in case everything just seems a little bit confusing. The team is ready to take notes on what you like and will suggest the best method for your coffee fix. Otherwise, go for something unique like On The Rock, a drink of barrel-aged coffee served over an ice ball. White coffee drinkers can try White Dutch, a cold drip coffee mixed with milk.

If you want to start making coffee at home, keep an eye out for their regular workshops where you’ll learn everything you need to know about cupping and brewing.
